Livingston Parish Students Recognized

For Automotive Knowledge

Denham Springs High School seniors Taylor Berthelot and Matt Hartman, pictured left to right with automotive instructor Van Guarino, recently won 2nd place in the Ford/AAA State Automotive Skills Competition.  Three high school seniors enrolled in Livingston Parish's automotive class have been recognized for their outstanding knowledge and skill in the field.

Denham Springs High School's Taylor Berthelot and Matt Hartman earned 2nd place in the Ford/AAA State Automotive Skills Competition, which was held in Alexandria, La.

Berthelot and Hartman advanced were in 4th place after the written portion of the competition, but improved their final ranking to 2nd place after completing the "hands-on" portion of the test.  The finals of the competition included repairing a car with 10 mechanical and/or electrical problems in less than 90 minutes.

Van Guarino, the parish's automotive instructor, noted that Casey Higginbotham, a junior at Doyle High School, also qualified for the state competition; however, because a student is only allowed to compete once, he opted to wait until his senior year to re-qualify and compete in the final competition.

Meanwhile, Holden High School's Tyler Moffitt was presented a certificate of passage for the Automotive Service Excellence brake exam. The exam allows Moffitt to become certified in automotive brake service following two years of experience in the industry.

"The test is very hard to take and pass for people who are employed in the automotive industry, even more so for a high school senior," said Thomas Hayman, substitute director of the Literacy and Technology Center, which houses the parish's automotive classes.

"We are very proud of Mr. Moffitt for his accomplishment, and we know the demonstration of his knowledge and skills through this exam will open up employment opportunities for him," Hayman added.

Hayman noted that the automotive teaching program was recently awarded national certification by the National Automotive Technician Education Foundation's (NATEF), placing it on par with other industry-recognized teaching institutions, and thus, making its students eligible for a national certification test that is required to work in the industry. NATEF certification is considered a standard in the professional automotive industry.

Happy Mother's Day

There is no love like a mother's love,
no stronger bond on earth
Like the precious bond that comes from God,
to a mother when she gives birth.

A mother's love is forever strong,
never changing for all time
And when her children need her most
a mother's love will shine.

God bless these special mothers,
God bless them every one
For all the tears and heartache,
and for the special work they've done.

When her days on earth are over,
a mother's love lives on
Through many generations,
with God's blessings on each one.

Be thankful for our mothers,
for they love with a higher love
From the power God has given,
and the strength from up above.

Three Generations share the love of mothers and daughters
